Hi guys, love the show. Just wanted to let you know that they are retiring the shuttle because they can't get parts for most of the systems anymore. The shuttle program was green lighted while we were watching astronauts roaming the moon in 1969. We didn't see the first shuttle, Enterprise, until 1976 and Columbia was first launched on April 12, 1981. In fact, on Columbia's last 2 or 3 missions, NASA had taken some parts from Enterprise and had to go onto eBay for some of the computer parts needed because no one made them anymore. While it would be nice if they could have waitied until April 12, 2011 to retire the fleet (the 30th Anniversary of Columbia's first lauch), I can why the fleet is being retired. It would have been nice if they could have been looking to innovate the shuttle style for a longer range flight to the Moon to deliver equipment for a Moon base and for launching flights to the rest of the Solar System for a start, but now we're going to be too dependent on Russia to get us to the Space Station and back in something that makes Apollo look modern. The equivalent technology would be like running the Internet on an Apple I, or if you did a minor upgrade, a Commodore 64 and if you went really high tech, a Radio Shack TRS80, Model 1, all with a 300baud modem.

@Shaded Spriter - thanks for the heads up on those! I would say that normally we would jump at the chance to geek with more Jones Sodas, but it looks like those are just renamed flavors of their regular sodas. (root beer, green apple, cream soda ect ) But PLEASE....keep your eyes peeled, we need to get some for the semi-traditional Holiday Jones Soda segments this year!

@Bryan J - thanks for chiming in about the tech segment, having never really done an actual full segment dedicated to just techy stuff was quite sure how it would go over. Hopefully we still gave it our unique PodCulture spin! (TWiT we are not!)

Hey guys, great episode. Just wanted to throw it out there that the whole tech part was a great segment. Speaking as someone who knows only the bare minimum about computers and other such products, but it interested in learning, you guys have given me tons of stuff to think about. So my vote is to add in more of this stuff, at least every so often. Keep up the great work

I haven't even finished listening to this episode, but I had to comment on the spoiler thing.

I'm old school, I guess, but I think everyone has to proceed at their own risk. Back in the days when VCRs were new, people knew to avoid newspapers or people who might tell them about a show they hadn't watched yet. There is nothing wrong with having a little "radio silence" when you know that possible spoilers might be out there. You don't have to be on the internet all the time. I stayed away from Twitter and other sci-fi and TV review sites when I knew that Torchwood was airing in the UK because I didn't want to hear anything about it. I don't listen to a lot of fan podcasts, but I would have avoided any Doctor Who-related shows, as well. Read a book until you have the chance to watch for yourself :-).

As for Selganor's Harry Potter example, it IS the same thing. You may have misunderstood him. When the 7th book first came out, EVERYONE was talking about the book, not just fans. There were fans who finished all 700+ pages in a single day, and couldn't wait to talk about it the day after the release. I was just like Selganor; I avoided all media until I could finish my copy.

Selganor....feel free anytime to start a discussion on the forums, I've got no problem with that at all. (heck that is why they are there in teh first place)

I stand by what I said about them spoiling on twitter, and take nothing back about it. They were just darn wrong....PERIOD. You mention Harry Potter, and while you have a point, it just is NOT the same AT ALL.

The books for Harry Potter have been out for quite awhile, so folks have had more than plenty of time to read them and know what is going on. (if folks choose not to read them, and then get spoiled...that is their own fault) However with Torchwood, the episode had not been over 15 min or so before they let the spoiler slip.....two completely different situations.

Why should a podcast that prides itself to stay on top of news regarding all things Dr. Who (and Torchwood) censor itself on news just because there's some part of the world that hadn't aired this episode. If it were so, they wouldn't be allowed to tell anything about Dr. Who past the first Tennant season and the first Torchwood season because they still didn't air here in Germany. (On a related note, Firefly still hasn't aired anywhere on german tv, we just got german dvd versions)

Granted, they could have handled the spoiler better (like posting a link to a forum entry in their spoiler section), but apparently they described certain parts of their site (front page and a part of their forums) as spoiler-free, which leads to the fact that their Twitter feed could contain spoilers (as it wasn't declared spoiler-free)

I went "offline" for the whole weekend when the 7th Potter novel was released because I knew that there might be the possibility that someone could spoil it for me. So whoever doesn't want to be spoiled just should stay away from those possible sources...

As for the future of Torchwood... the series is called Torchwood, not "Captain Jack". So there can be further seasons even if Jack never returns (why would he have to return, he "lost" everything that could keep him here) just with another cast. (Spooks rarely has the same unit for more than one season)

And I'll have to disagree with Christina (sorry). This season was by far the best season of Torchwood (even better than some of the new Dr. Who seasons). Finally the proof that it is possible to produce something for adults without resorting to "cheap tricks" (like sex, swears and violence).
I expected the big reset button RTD is so fond of ever since "the incident", and was pleasantly surprised that he didn't use it.

I'd have answered on the forums, but there isn't a topic for that.

This is for Christina, I was looking for you on Facebook to "fan" you, but there were several Karr's. It is not a problem if you have a problem with this. My wife has dragged me into Facebook, now that I'm in I just want to add people I like.

I am a long time listener and you make me smile everytime you laugh.

I am sorry to here about your recent loss and I do feel for you, I now am Grand-less and it hurts.

Thank you for your time,

And for our live show, we made Cliss PROMISE to keep it family safe or she would owe... She actually managed to pull it off. Fun episode guys! Keep it up!

In regards to "Playing for Keeps", I'd highly recommend it. I finished it last week and it fast became one of those books that I just kept at because I was reluctant to put down. Besides, I *had* to read it soon, since Brad pretty much literally *ran* back up to his room to get it for me. Thanks Brad!

@lyndasty - You were not the recipient of the emails I recieved from Star in response to my questioning of the decision regarding the press creds. While perhaps I could have phrased it a bit better; I stand by my comments regarding Star 100%.

As for your comments about the number of listener/downloads...our numbers were smaller last year and even smaller in 2006, and they were good enough then, so why not now, when the show is bigger than in prior years?

Regarding the suggestion that FPM contact D*C directly next year....good idea, but I believe that was tried to no avail this year.

@spambrian - I agree with your comments things need to be defined CLEARLY on the D*C site. Even as I recieved the denial from Star (and the less-than-stellar explination) the site was STILL listing podcasts on the media credintal request form. NOWHERE did it ever state that a podcast was not media.

Toss all that on top of having had credentials the previous couple years, and you have one hell of a lot of confusion, and a slap in the face to people who have helped to promote the con in the past.

Regarding the accessibility in the panels....it WAS the folks working security who caused the issues in the first place. It was pretty much an isolated event....having only really been an issues at one of the panel locations (the massive new atrium hall at the Marriott)

For the most part....we can't say enough good things about most of the D*C staff it is just this year a couple rotten apples spoiled what was to be a fun working vacation for Christina and I.

The real issue here is understanding what "media relations" is for a convention. The "media" isn't just the press. It's everything from news media, new media (podcasting, etc.) and outlets that are not what we normally consider press but speak to our audience (HBO, G4TV, ...).

Entities like G4TV had problems getting press credentials. This is a big problem for the convention ... G4 gives the con good coverage bu they don't fall into the traditional new outlets. Some better qualification is required without opening the doors to every one who claims to be "press."

If you have issues with seating and handicapped accessibility in panels, talk to convention security.

Dragon*Con TV is DIRECTLY CONNECTED to/with Dragon*Con. It fails under the umbrella of Dragon*Con and it's staffing needs. Just like the Daily Dragon is the official publication/press for Dragon*Con, Dragon*Con TV is the official television coverage for the convention.

I know for a fact that the press badges for this year were DRASTICALLY cut back because it was getting out of hand with people requesting press ribbons/credentials.

There were panels that I wasn't allowed in because it was full to capacity and I was on staff for the Daily Dragon. The blocking off of chairs for the disabled (and press) was put in the hands of the tracks hosting the panel, such as Whedon Universe, SGOW, American SciFi etc.

I think you need to look at the numbers of listeners/downloaders/etc. It might be a case of asking Farpoint Media to talk to the D*Con press office about badges next year.

And, just for clarification, there are more press badges given out for sci-fi/fantasy online magazines/blogs than traditional media. The only traditional media that I know of that had press credentials were a couple of the local tv stations who always provide good press for D*Con and I think the Atlanta Journal-Constitution who, again, provides POSITIVE press for D*Con, especially the parade and charity fund raising that the convention does.

And Star isn't a bitch. She doesn't make the decision on who gets press credentials and who doesn't. That falls to the senior director to make those decisions and, after having been around the PR/press relations senior director, I don't envy the decisions she has to make in the slightest.

Hayden Panettiere was upset about basically not being allowed to talk to ANYONE at Dragon*Con. She wasn't allowed out of her room without an escort because NBC had her on lockdown because they didn't have any say so in her attending Dragon*Con and, because of that, weren't in a position to send anyone with her or James Kyson Lee from the NBC PR department to make sure she didn't leak any spoilers.

Today's Something Awful's Photoshop Phriday is of Jones Soda...I wonder how many of them you would actually try if they were real.

Thanks "Dafixer". I don't watch much mainstream television these days (although I hear Boston Legal is really good...and it does have Shatner). I really must see pics of Rhona as Robin...reminds me of "Beyond The Valley of the Dolls" and the costume party. I met the girl that wore the Robin costume in that movie, when I commented on the quality of the costume she informed me they got it from the FOX wardrobe department...it was the real one used on the Batman TV show!

Oh, and I just read about "Outlander", I thought it sounded a LOT like Beowulf. I wonder if they changed it around because of all the Beowulf movies the last few years?

You've forgot the work Rhona Mitra did for the longest time. She was on the last few seasons of The Practice then moved over to Boston Legal where she was Alan Shore's girlfriend. In one of the BL episodes, she appears in a Robin costumn and it was something to behold. Just wanted to add that.

Correction - (On my part) :-D
During Glenn's Guilty Pleasure segment talking about the movie "Doomsday" and "Beowulf" - I mention an upcoming sci-fi movie based on "Beowulf" - It actually stars Jim Caviezel (not Christian Bale as I said) and is called "Outlander". Sorry for the mistake!

*sniffs* G-Force was such a letdown when viewed as an adult. As a kid, it was the best, worth coming in from outside to watch. Now, I look at it and wonder what kind of dumba** kid I was back then.

To "Not Me":

Never let it be said that I don't allow the negative comments here on the site. I do wish they had been a little more towards constructive criticism and not anonymous, but hey ya took the time to comment so we'll take that as a compliment! Thank you!

Regarding the "obsessed with candy" comment. Good point we did talk about candy a LOT! You did say earlier it was the first time you listened to our show, so you probabally were not aware that that Geek Cuisine is a regular segment of the show where we find some sort of odd, strange, or just bizzare candy or soda and taste-test it and review it on the show.

I'm sorry you didn't care for Christina's voice, I may be a little biased, but I kinda like it and well...she is not going anywhere. Her being on the show adds quite a bit to what otherwise would be two guys sitting around yapping about geek stuff.

I highly doubt it was because of the laughter on the show, but it is too bad that your milk happened curdle as you were listening, if you email me directly with your name and mailing addy, I will buy you a new gallon and send it to you.

Again, thanks for listening and I hope to hear from you again soon!

Peace,
Brad

This was the first time I'd heard your podcast. I downloaded it at random. The guys are ok. A little obsessed with candy, but whatever. The girl's gotta go. Her voice is extremely grating. It's like one of those "baby girl" voices, so fake, and her laughter actually curdled the milk in my fridge. Please don't let her near a microphone ever again.

I can't believe it. My eyes welled up reading this. I'm just now delving into the Stargate series and I really enjoy his character. Reading about him, he seemed like he was a very kind soul. The world had lost an amazing man.

Shaded, I wasn't aware that leaving off a discriptive term, made a term incorrect or untrue. Would my telling someone that I have a car be incorrect if I had say a BLUE car? I don't think so.

to Lisa: Yeah I couldn't let the passing of George Carlin pass by without doing something, and since we had already recorded it was too late to record anything and get it into the show. (not to mention the fact that the clip wasn't exactly pod-safe either) It was also one of my favorite routines of his as well.

How many more segments will this go? Will it match the 4-Epi sweep of "Frack You, Benry Linus"?

We'll see, Next time, on Pod Culture!

After hearing the "Avenue Q" discussion, I wondered if you'd seen "Meet the Feebles," Peter Jackson's whacked out puppet comedy from 1989. It's hilarious, at least if you have a somewhat wrong sense of humor, and find puppets inherently funny. I do.

Love the show.

While Christina may agree with ya about Donna, I sadly can not. I'll give that she is much less annoying than she was in the Christmas special...she still grates on my nerves. Maybe if she sticks around she'll grow on me some. Either way it will be very interesting next week when she meets up with Martha! (my fav compantion next to Sarah Jane)

You guys really do need to try the new Who with Donna. It is the best Who I've seen since Eccleston, and (I wouldn't have believed it but) Donna is amazing.

Guess I'll try to leave a comment here. Fun, as per usual, though at the risk of raising a political-esque debate, one disagreement. Like Brad, I prefer most of my weaponry "old school". Glenn likes the modern era. While, in theory, someone else armed might have prevented many of these horrible shootings from going as far as they did, my main worry is that such a situation simply adds more bullets into an already chaotic scene. As ex-students of mine who have served in the sand have told me, firefights are confused, ugly situations in which most people panic and fire poorly. While I trust Glenn (fool!), I don't want to be seated next to him when this goes off. If he misses, there's a whole lot more lead flying in that direction in just a second! I guess end argument from my angle is more guns = more bullets.

I really like Primeval better than Torchwood, although Torchwood is slowly getting watchable episodes. The order from worst to "best" so far would be 2-1-3-4
I just don't accept this series to be in the same continuity as Doctor Who (which I now really enjoy watching old episodes from Doctors 3, 4 and 5)

Christina, don't worry. Tennant so far has no plans to leave his post as the Doctor (although season 5 won't be a normal series but some movies)

I don't know if I should recomend you watching the "pitch-reel" for season 4 Veronica@FBI. If it were, I'd have taken the series top production in a blink. Just watch it and make up your own mind.

Yeah I noticed that tape comment as well, but the opening credit sequence of the film did say "SD card" So either the military either transfered the tape to a SD card or the main character (who I believe said he wasn't sure how to operate the camera) used "tape" as a generic term for the recording media.

For your discussion about the SD vs Tape for the Cloverfield camera, at one point during the party the main character asked Hud if he changed the tape in the camera because there was something important on the tape. So I think it was a tape...

As for cutting down the beginning, they needed that to establish the relationship that drove the movie. And we have to admit it may have been a monster movie but it was also a love story.

"Sontaran Experiment" is an interesting little two-parter in the Dr Who canon. If you're looking to see more of the Sontarans, they will be back this year and their debut (and best episode) comes out later this year--The Time Warrior.

If you're looking to add more Who to the DVD collection, let me recommend Pyramids of Mars.

Fred...I did some checking and apparently there is some sort of server issue with the server that our site (and files) are hosted on.

Some of the other FPM shows are experiencing the same thing. I'm not crazy about it but until it is fixed (new hardware due to be installed this weekend) file delivery could be erratic at best.

I'd suggest trying a couple of things: A. Try downloading again later...system may work then. B. Try downloading via iTunes, sometimes they cache the files and you may be able to get a copy thru them, or C. ping me on Skype (username: PodCulture)and I can manually send you the file.

I appologize for any problems you are having, and thank you for sticking with us thru these pesky issues that pop up now and again.

Peace,
Brad

Actually it was FIVE shows and we were drinking not eating. However the "Geek Cuisine" bits are a regular part of the show and will be staying a part of the show. Also the Jones Soda episodes have become a tradition with us as a fun and wacky way to celebrate special episodes.

I am sorry you didn't enjoy the show...maybe some future episodes will be more enjoyable for you.

4 shows of eating food? I had to fast forward through the whole thing. God listening to people eat food makes my stomach turn. Please talk about some scifi in your next show. I like that part.

BTW, great show as usual, thanks. Every time I listen to your show I wish I could be there hanging out with you guys.

Howdy there John!

Don't worry about the umm and ahhs...heck we do that all the time ourselves! As for only two messages...well that's all we had to play. We don't get a LOT of calls to the ol' voicemail line, but man what we do get is quality! Looking forward to hearing you again.

Peace,
Brad

Hey I heard myself on the podcast today, and I say "umm" and "and" a lot, I have to fix that, and whats the deal only two messages? I am planning on calling again, just because I can't remember things to well and calling gives you the experience of having my fresh thoughts.

Howdy there Mister Supervillian!

ComputerKing,

Thanks for the kind words. As for voicemail "ratings" honestly we don't really have a policy about that. I'd say PG13ish maybe.

Heck we've dropped more than our fair share of swears. Usually the milder stuff like Sh*t or A$$ that sort of thing. Not that we really disapprove of strong language or anything...it's just that that's how we normally talk. For example...the times we've actually dropped the f-bomb ourselves on the show are few and far between, but we've also played Johnathan Coulton's "First of May" on the show too. (and that has a metric crapton of f-bombs)

Peace,
Brad

Well, I must apologize to your crew for failuring to listen to this show for so long. I commend you on your excellent show. You've hooked me. You have now become part of my listening repertoire.

Of course, since you're a part of Farpoint Media, you are also my sworn enemy (Sorry, I'm sorta the unofficial Farpoint Supervillain).

One question, though: What "rating" do you prefer your voicemails? I didn't notice any racy or explicit language or content in the show, but this is, as I said, my first listen.

I'm sure many listeners have already corrected you on this: Ashlee was right. The Sanctuary episodes are $1.99 per episode for standard definition and $2.49 per episode for HD. According to their blog the pricing decision was just made on 30 Jul.

Of course, none of this really means anything to me because I haven't watched any of the series. I didn't want to get hooked on the free eps when I knew I wasn't going to buy it.
