PodCulture 191: Geek Trek Online

Posted on Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Their phasers are set to “awesome” this week. Get ready for Star Trekking across the internet!

Adam opens this week with his busy week at work and playing the Star Trek beta. Glenn is caught up with shows that are now back from their break. They’re loving Chuck, Supernatural, and Christina is hopelessly in love with Walter on Fringe. The boys eagerly await Lord of the Rings on blu-ray, and Christina is enjoying the Fringe bloopers. Glenn isn’t ready Prestige again in Modern Warfare 2. Christina has had her fill of the long days at work, and had a most bogus experience at the hospital. Glenn hasn’t been able to fly because of the fog, which leads Adam and Christina to geek about the gorgeously English weather.

Brad and Adam (and Christina, a little bit) have been playing the ghe’tor out of the Star Trek Online beta. Glenn and Adam try to convince Christina to watch all the movies, and she concedes for the love of Stewart and Nimoy. Both Adam and Brad have pre-ordered it through Steam, and discuss the extra goodies it will include. Being a total MMO noob, Brad is learning the ropes via the Star Trek ranks. Adam finds out the multiplication properties of Tribbles, and Christina still thinks they should be used as currency. Adam has played the beta for Star Wars Galaxies and the Lord of the Rings MMO, as well as having dabbled mildly in World of Warcraft. In his geek-honored opinion, he worries about interface issues, but looks forward to how the game will grow. They talk about some of the funnier glitches, and some of the nods to cannon characters. Despite being a World of Warcraft genius, Glenn has not signed up for the Starfleet. He and Adam talk game mechanics, and he sways toward picking it up. Christina knows nowt of Star Trek beyond the appreciation of Julian Bashir hotness and Troi hair envy. Still, she enjoys the gorgeous graphics, and enjoyed dipping her toe into the pool of character creation. Brad talks about his character’s visit to Deep Space 9, and they all look forward to future updates. Brad talks about the various subscription packs and options. What do you think? Would you take the chance on a lifetime subscription to a MMO? Give Christina suggestions for a hobby now that Brad will be warping to sector Trek now!

In closing, the quartet is coming down from sugar highs, and Christina is ready to hit the sack. Her final thought asks for good things to watch, asks for book suggestions to listen to on her daily commutes. Glenn talks about WoW and Jeeves, and the gang tries talk him into signing up for Star Trek Online. Adam entreats us to watch Chuck, and Christina geeks a bit about the Chuck app for the iPhone.

PodCulture 190: Extra Geeky Girly Happy – Part C

Posted on Sunday, January 24th, 2010

The boys open this week’s episode of PodCulture!

Glenn drops the news that I Am Legend will have a prequel, and Hancock will have a sequel, and they’re in dire need of geek girl estrogen.

When Christina returns, it’s time for some guilt. Glenn brings us OneChanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad. Brad may have the game, but Glenn brings us the movie!

Glenn is weathering the winter hiatus by watching Conspiracy Theory. What’s the most pirated tv show out there? Yep, it’s Heroes. Which actor on it tickles Christina’s fancy. Adam is on a Mystery Science Theater 3000 kick, and enjoying season 2 of Better Off Ted. Christina is watching The Tudors, while she and Brad are delving into Pushing Dasies, and both are looking forward to exploring the bonus features on the Fringe blu-ray. The pair are excited that Adam will be watching Primeval soon. Brad picked up Watchmen on blu-ray, and Christina is giddy girly happy for her collection of Today’s Special. As one of her oldest fandoms, she revels in her dorkitude. Brad and Glenn both have season 2 of Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. Glenn has the last two seasons of 24 on dvd, but hasn’t yet watched one episode of the series. Christina announces that she has finally seen National Lampoons Christmas Vacation for the very first time, much to the marvel of the guys. Adam shares his favorite Chevy Chase monologue from the movie. Everyone is happy that Chuck is back on, and Adam is caught up with Supernatural. Brad and Christina have watched Tim Burton’s “9″.

They close entreating the audience to watch great tv, and support shows that you enjoy. Your caffeinated Culture Crew is excited about Mountain Dew Throwback. Glenn tells us about the clash of the titans for Spiderman 4, and the boys spin webs of theories. What shows and movies are you looking forward to?

PodCulture 189: Extra Geeky Girly Happy – Part B

Posted on Sunday, January 17th, 2010

The boys open the show without the token geek girl, but she’ll be back soon enough.

Christina returns just in time for Glenn to get his Guilt on. He brings us The Howling 2, and Brad researches The Howling 6 with marsupials. Are there were-koalas? Christina likens it to the were-animals in the Sookie Stackhouse universe.

Adam opens the gaming segment with some demos he’s been playing. He shares the great design of Dante’s Inferno, comparing the gameplay to God of War. The rating of the games spawns a discussion on ratings and lenient, or unaware, parents. Adam also plays the demo of Bayonetta, and discusses the hottness of a hair costume. Glenn is lost in Modern Warfare, but has made time for Left 4 Dead 2. He has Prestiged in Modern Warfare and considers repeating it. Along with Lego Rock Band, Brad has been playing Torchlight on Steam as well as Plants Versus Zombies. He and Christina have pre-ordered Bioshock 2…TWICE! He shares the list of goodies the collector’s edition comes with. Which platform will Adam be getting his copy for? Glenn talks of Battlefield Bad Company 2, and anticipates it’s release. Adam has beaten Burnout Paradise with the expansion islands.

Stay tuned for the “best” of our worst at the end of the episode.

PodCulture 188: Extra Geeky Girly Happy – Part A

Posted on Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Brad is at a loss for words as we open this episode of PodCulture!

Glenn has had a mildly geeky holiday, and has enjoyed the last two weeks, playing Modern Warfare. Along the same lines, he bought himself some new artillery for Christmas, and has his hand back into World of Warcraft. Adam shares the story of his brother’s precarious car trouble. Christina is working her butt off at work, and watching The Tudors. Brad’s patience is worn training noobs at work, and trying not to break any body parts on the ice.

Andy (aka Freehold South) calls the PodCulture Voicemail, and shares the induction of his son to the frightening world of Tofurkey and Gravy Jones Soda. Yes, his son drinks it live on the phone!

Geek Cuisine is Lost with Tropical Chewy Lemonheads and Friends.

We share some of the geekier haul from our holidays. Glenn shares the newest addition to his weaponry collection, and talks about the unique qualities of a Ruger .22 magnum. Adam talks about his Doctor Who swag. Christina tells of her Amy Acker autograph, Today’s Special on dvd, and her Medieval Games Wii game. Brad is dreamily gazing at his Freema Agyeman autographed photograph, and the gang talks about the adorableness of Lego Rock Band. He shares the awesomeness of the James Bond ten blu-ray set Christina gave him for Christmas, and the tome of Stephen King’s “Under The Dome” from his mom. Christina bears the ridicule of the boys and talks about her Jacob Black action figure, and Brad tells of the success of buying the Wii for his sister and family. The pair spin the story of New Year’s Eve, playing Super Mario with their friends. Adam shares about his very own personalized My Little Pony: Apocalypse Pony that he got for Christmas. Glenn tells us that Carly has gotten the Twilight Series of books, and Christina has finished Breaking Dawn. Glenn got her the latest season of Deadliest Catch on dvd. Adam’s friend Richard got him the Sonic and Laser Screwdriver Dueling set, and the boys plan a trip to laser tag.

PodCulture 187: The End of Ten – Part B

Posted on Thursday, January 7th, 2010

He has knocked four times, The Doctor has regenerated once again. Brad, Adam and Christina are drying their eyes and talking about David, The Doctor and Regeneration.

As they open, the Time Lords and Lady choose their favorite David Tennant episodes. What’s your favorite episode from David’s tenure? What’s your favorite episode for his character? Tell us!

Spoilers, they are a’flyin’! If you have not seen the last half of The End Of Time, please keep this episode on your hard drive until you have!

Christina does her best to recap the episode, and the boys fill in the gaps when she’s at a loss. She has nearly decapitated her Spike puppet during the tense show, and everyone in the room needs an adult beverage. They talk about special effects, character metamorphoses, and just rewards. Adam calls a character a dumbass, Brad appreciates hotness, and Christina will be picking up shards of broken hearts in the office for weeks. Is it a just ending to five years? Do they feel cheated? Vindicated? Find out. What endeared Matt Smith to the trio? What would they have changed? How does it remind them of Serenity? They adore Bernard Cribbins, and talk about the most moving bits of the episode. The gang discusses The Master and The Time Lords, and the lesser of two evils. They theorize about Torchwood and discuss two of the actors who were on Being Human. Each takes a turn listing their hopes for not only Matt Smith as an actor, but the show as a whole. Tell us what you think!

In closing, they honor the medium of good television, and discuss the United Kingdom’s most entertaining export. Brad and Christina are trying to get Adam to watch Primeval, and compare Andrew Lee Potts’ performances in that and Alice. Christina entreats future generations to create genius, and Brad begs Quantum Mechanix to take up Doctor Who merchandise!

Music comes affirmatively from Quantum Locked with “The Sound of Drums” and “Onward” by Dr. Noise. Both can be found on the brilliantly fantastic cd, Trock On.

PodCulture 186: The End of Ten – Part A

Posted on Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Time Lords, Companions and Tin Dogs, we welcome you to a special episode of PodCulture.

Brad, Adam and Christina open this special episode with chat of their holidays! Adam spent the festivities weekend with his family, while Brad and Christina enjoyed a quiet Christmas. Adam and Christina agree that giving presents is so much more fun than receiving. The geekiest thing he got was the Doctor Who Visual Dictionary from one the siblings he got hooked on Who, and he gave them Whovian presents in return. Brad has a hard time picking his geekiest present, but it must include his Time Lord box of goodies from Christina. She picked almost everything out on Zaniahz.com. It included the set of Time Squad figures, The Art of Destruction novel, a Tosh Torchwood figure, and an autographed photograph of David Tennant and Freema Agyeman. To celebrate both the New Year and the new Doctor, she surprises Adam with a t-shirt from ThinkGeek.com, with the Tardis on it, that reads “You Never Forget Your First Doctor”.

SPOILER ALERT! We take no prisoners, we keep no secrets. If you haven’t watched part one of The End of Time, and wish to remain spoilerless, please consider keeping this episode until you’re ready to geek fully with us! Don’t worry, we’ve got the Tardis, we’ve got time.

Christina gives her best shot at a synopsis of part one, while the boys tap The Master’s tattoo, singing the praises of Bernard Cribbins and June Whitfield. The trio discusses what regeneration means for an audience, their views of Russell T. Davies’ treatment of the tale, and what it all means for the Doctor. Adam shares his theory about what could have happened, what should have happened, and what his hopes are for part two. Christina questions the other companions, and throws out her impossible wish for Donna and Romana. Could she possibly love John Simm any more? Brad begs the question of which companion’s mom is scariest? Give us your thoughts? Adam talks about the emotion between actors and how that comes across on the screen. Tell us your regeneration story? Which Doctor was your first Doctor? Tell us who you’ve hooked to watch with you? The three talk about aspects of actors playing the Doctor and who they have loved along the way. As they close, Christina grasps desperately at the mic so she doesn’t have to see the end, but alas, the show must go on…

Our special musical guest for this episode is Chameleon Circuit with their song: An Awful Lot of Running from their CD Chameleon Circuit.
