PodCulture 85: Sunny Days – Part 3

Posted on Monday, December 31st, 2007

We welcome Sunny back in our studio for one more episode!

In Geek ‘n Tell this week, Glenn’s been trying to avoid the holiday madness, but Brad and Christina try to pick up the slack. Brad’s mom got him the hardbound collected volume of Stephen Kings Dark Tower “Gunslinger Born” comic. He’s picked up the Star Trek novel, “Before Dishonor”, and “The Zombie Survival Guide”. We’ve added to the toy shelf with the chubby Superfriends Aquaman figure. The boys talk about the addictiveness of Woot.com, and Sunny talks about Stephen Brusts novels.

Geek Cuisine this week comes from Sunny’s wife, Molly, in the form of fantastic ginger bread with cream cheese frosting. Walking into the lion’s den, Sunny bravely tries the “tangy high happy flavor” of Gingerbread Jones Soda. Brad looks forward to the Ninja Bread Man game for the Wii.

In closing, we talk about The Royal Channel on YouTube, and the PodCulture spinoff, “The Geek Spin”. If you’ve got some podsafe music you’d like us to play on The Geek Spin, drop us a line! Do you like the non-podsafe Billy Joel?

We share our best, worst, and most WTF presents of Christmas past. Christina always got something Phantomish from her mom, and Brad always gets something Stephen King from his. What was your best geek present as a kid? Send us a voicemail! The conversation devolves into talking about weird scars and odd injuries. Brad tells the story about the block-wide stink of burned Christmas candy, Glenn regales us with his Evel Knievel toy of destruction, and Sunny remembers his perfect ripcord motorcycle adventure with his brother. Brad and Glenn talk about laser tag on their college campus. Sunny recants the Midnight Zombies Breakfast and Coffee Club, and what happens when you mix an eight hour sugar high with rampant bunnies.

Thanks so much to Buffy:Between The Lines for their promo, and Scott Rose with his song “Kentucky Fried Night”

PodCulture 84: Sunny Days – Part 2

Posted on Saturday, December 29th, 2007

We welcome Sunny back to our methods and our madness for another week of PodCulture!

Glenn gets his guilt on, right off the bat, with H.P. Lovecraft’s “From Beyond”! We talk about Hayao Miyazaki films, foreign gems like Jean de Florette and Amelie, and whether it’s better to watch a film dubbed, or subbed. What’s Glenn’s favorite Guilty Pleasure of the year? Which one makes him cringe the most? Listen and find out!

Geek ‘n Tell finds Glenn with a bevy of HD booty. He’s redeemed the free disc offer from Best Buy with Aeon Flux, Swordfish, Black Rain, and The Frighteners. The HD prize he’s paid for this go around is the five disc collector’s edition of Bladerunner. He’s added Clive Barker’s Jericho to his game list. Brad’s got Battlestar Galactica: Razor, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire, Around the World in 80 Days, and season one of the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Darkman: The Franchise Collection, 2009:Lost Memories and Yesterday on dvd.  Sunny tells us of one of his favorite books, “Proteus Operation” by James P. Hogan.

Thanks so very much to Tom Smith for his song, “CYA” , and to BigDamnSequel.com for their promo.

Got bandwidth?

Posted on Friday, December 28th, 2007

“We love our fans! You guys helped break a switch at an ISP! Yay you!”

Hey gang,

As some of you guys may nave noticed the past couple of days there have been problems with downloading episodes of the show. (and the slow loading of the sites) The place that hosts PodCulture, The GeekSpin and a LOT of the other Farpoint Media shows had a switch quit working. New hardware is on order and should be installed by the end of this weekend.

In the meantime the number of connections that can be made to the server is limited, so please keep checking back as you WILL be able to download episodes, however it may take several tries. There are a couple of options if anyone should want to try them:

A. Try downloading again later…system may work then.

B. Try downloading via iTunes, (or another podcatcher) sometimes they cache the files and you may be able to get a copy thru them, or

C. ping me on Skype (username: PodCulture) and I can manually send you the file.

I apologize for any problems you are having, and thank you for sticking with us thru these pesky issues that pop up now and again.

Peace,

Brad

PodCulture 83: Sunny Days – Part 1

Posted on Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

After an introduction by the fully-functioning Denise Crosby, we welcome our studio guest, Sunny, to the madness of PodCulture!

Glenn’s been shopping at the Gun Show in town, and has seen “I Am Legend”. He compares the novel to the several versions of film, and has a high opinion of the newest incarnation. We talk about Christmas with Brad’s family, finishing shopping, and watching Invader Zim. Sunny introduces us to XKCD, and admires the masterful Halo 3 tactics of his stepson.

Glenn’s been watching Jet Li’s “Fearless”, “Superbad”, “I Know Who Killed Me”, and “Hot Fuzz”. Christina and Brad are still plowing through Babylon 5, “Dodgeball”, (the movie we couldn’t think of was “Blast From The Past”), and watched the last three episodes of season 3 of Doctor Who. Brad laments the choice of car in the remake of Knight Rider. Glenn drop the bomb that Dead Zone and 4400 have been canceled. Christina has finally finished the master list of the household dvd collection. Sunny’s been watching “Bourne Ultimatum”, “Bollywood/Hollywood”, and “Namesake”.

Brian from the British Invaders podcast sends us a voicemail explaining the Chanukah flavors from our Jones Soda collection.

For Geek Cuisine, we’re all about the holidays this week, as Brad talks about (and shares) his contribution for his “Candy Day” family tradition.

Thanks so much to Worm Quartet for “Hair On The Soap”, and thanks to the NightGig podcast for their promo!

PodCulture 82: Don't Drink the Latke

Posted on Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

Writer Gwendolyn Jensen-Woodard, of Buffy Between the Lines, introduces our motley crew this week. We welcome Andy, Ashlee, Adam and Todd back into our studio!

Glenn gives us his review of “Hitman” and “The Golden Compass”, and the gang talks about the media controversy of the latter. We compare whether or not we should read books before we see their big screen counterparts, or vice versa. Which do you do? Andy has been enjoying “Tin Man” on Sci-Fi, and Ashlee’s seen Beowulf in 3-D while mourning her 360. Ashlee has indoctrinated her grandmother in the ‘verse of Firefly and Serenity, and reveals her big news that she got accepted to the Vancouver Film School.

Brad and Christina have been watching “Genesis of the Daleks,” “Buckroo Bonzai”, and “Primeval”. Glenn is finally caught up with Heroes, while looking forward to Lost Season 3 on dvd. Andy is trying without success to get his wife to watch Battlestar Galactica. The group talks about having massive amounts of television on what the young whippersnappers of today would call “antiquated” media, like VHS and laser disc.

Brad gets an extra round of applause for watching “Talladega Nights”, despite his dislike (and that’s gentle) for Will Ferrell.

Geek Cuisine this week is Cadbury Christmas Ornament Eggs.

Our 2 year anniversary Guilty Pleasure may only be outdone by “Robo Vampire”. A movie called “Stargrove” aka “Never Too Young To Die” comes a very, very close second to last year’s guilt-fest.

Thanks so much, as always, to Beatnik Turtle for their song, “Goin’ Through The Motions This Christmas”, and The Great Luke Ski for his festive “Christmas at Hogwarts”.

Promos this week come kindly from The Scapecast, and BigDamnSequel.com.

Slight delay on Episode 82

Posted on Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Hey guys,

Just wanted to make a quick post that there will be a slight delay on episode 82. (it should only be a day or so maybe) I’ve been crazy busy with stuff for the “real job” and a few other things as well. Toss a sore throat and cold on top of that, and you’ve got one tired podcast editor! So if you guys don’t mind I’m going to take it easy tonight, and (hopefully) get some extra rest. I plan on having the show ready to go tomorrow evening….so get ready to get your geek on then!

Peace,

Brad

The fifth installment brings the Jones Soda Holiday Spectacular to a close with the 2007 Christmas pack. We start with Egg Nog, Sugar Plum, Christmas Tree, and Christmas Ham.

We’d love to thank our friends Andy, Adam, Ashlee and Todd one more time, and hope they’ll still speak to us next Christmas.

To close, we send our gratitude to Luke Ski for his song “Fanboy Christmas II”!

PodCulture 80: Holidazed and Confused – Part 4

Posted on Friday, December 14th, 2007

To introduce our next installment, we have Andre Gower, from the not-as-scary-as-these-sodas film The Monster Squad

Fourth in the lineup of Sodas brings the gluttons for punishment some relief with the Dessert Pack! We have Apple Pie, Blueberry Pie (a disturbing rant about Wookie Milk), Lemon Meringue Pie, and Cherry Pie.

We’d love to thank Rick Cormier for his “Shopping With A Weapon In My Hand”. (We mean no disrespect to those in Omaha, it’s just that when we found it a long while back, it reminded us of Glenn doing his Christmas shopping)
